The paperwork includes standard items like informed consent and practice policies as well as some questionnaires that will be tailored to your specific situation.
For couples therapy, you will be asked to complete an additional online questionnaire that is filled out by each partner individually.

If you google the address on your phone, please use "Courage to Heal Therapy" because using the address of "80 Garden Center" can take you to a wrong location near I-25.
When you arrive at 80 Garden Ctr, look for the light-brown building labeled with a large white letter "A." You will see the main entrance with mailboxes on the right-hand side of the door. To the right of those mailboxes is another, more narrow glass door.
Enter through that narrow glass door and you will immediately see a staircase going down. Once you come downstairs, turn right and enter the first waiting room you see on your right (it's just one door down the hallway). I'm in Suite 42, and I'll get you from the waiting room.
There are other ways to get to my office from any entrance in the building, you just have to follow the signs (I'm on the basement floor)

Confidentiality & Privacy
When you self-pay, your therapeutic work stays fully between you and your therapist. Using insurance means the insurance company has access to your diagnosis, treatment plan, and clinical notes. Many clients prefer to keep their healing journey completely private, and self-paying allows for that.Freedom to Choose the Right Therapist
I specialize in trauma-focused care because it requires advanced training, ongoing consultation, and a deep level of attunement. Self-pay allows you to work with a therapist who offers highly individualized, specialized support – not someone assigned based on a provider list.No Required Diagnosis
Insurance companies typically require a mental health diagnosis in order to pay for therapy. Sometimes a diagnosis isn’t clinically appropriate, or a client may not want one attached to their permanent medical record. Self-pay lets us focus on healing, not labels.Flexible Scheduling & Session Style
Therapists who are not tied to insurance can often offer more creative and flexible options: longer sessions, intensive sessions, walking or outdoor therapy, evening availability, or virtual care. With self-pay, we decide together what supports you best.Full Control Over Your Treatment
Insurance can come with rules: how often you can come, how long therapy should last, and what type of work is allowed. When you self-pay, we get to shape the process based on your goals, your pace, and your nervous system, not an insurance timeline.Clarity & Simplicity
Insurance doesn’t always cover the full cost of therapy, and many plans limit the number of sessions. For some, paying out of pocket ends up being more straightforward and predictable: no surprise bills, no denied claims, and no waiting for approval. -
There are limited spots for people who would like a reduced fee. I assign them on a case-by-case basis. If you would like to inquire about a reduced fee, please email me at anna@couragetohealtherapy.com.
-
A superbill is a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance company if you’d like to request reimbursement for therapy you’ve already paid for. In order for a superbill to be accepted, it must include a mental health diagnosis code—meaning that a diagnosis will become part of your permanent medical record.
I am an out-of-network provider and do not contract directly with insurance companies, so reimbursement is handled between you and your insurer.
-
It’s always a good idea to check directly with your insurance company to understand what they will and won’t reimburse. Most insurers offer an online portal where you can review the details of your plan. You’ll want to look specifically at your out-of-network benefits, which may include a deductible you need to meet first, as well as the percentage they will reimburse per session.
Every insurance plan is different, so it’s best to confirm the details with your provider before beginning therapy.
The Therapy Process
-
Therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all, and the length of the journey is different for everyone.
Some clients begin to feel relief and make meaningful changes after a few months, while others choose to work longer to explore deeper healing and growth.
We move at the pace that feels right and safe for you - honoring both your goals and the needs of the parts of you that may need more time and care.
You're never expected to rush your healing; instead, we work together to create lasting, meaningful change at a rhythm that supports your nervous system and your life.
-
Finding the right therapist is such an important part of your healing, and it’s completely okay to want to make sure we’re a good fit.
That’s why I offer a free 15-minute consultation - so you can get a feel for my approach, ask any questions you may have, and see how it feels to connect with me.
During our consultation, there’s no pressure - just a chance for you to explore whether my style feels supportive and aligned with what you’re looking for.
Your comfort and trust matter deeply, and I want you to feel empowered in choosing the right person to walk with you on your path to healing.
-
Yes - confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapy, and everything you share with me stays private. I provide a safe, protected space where you can be open without fear of judgment or your information being shared.
The only exceptions to confidentiality are rare and required by law - such as if there’s a concern about your safety or someone else’s.
If those situations ever arise, I will do my best to talk with you about them first. Your trust is deeply important to me, and I take your privacy very seriously.

For EMDR therapy, it takes a few sessions of history taking and preparation before processing with eye movements can begin.
In cases of complex trauma, the preparation phase will likely take longer than a few sessions.
What happens in a session varies depending on what phase of EMDR therapy we are in. I will be happy to provide more details during or initial consultation – or you can read my blog post about the EMDR process.
-
Couples therapy usually begins with a thorough assessment of both partners and their interaction patterns.
The first session will be held with both partners present. The second and third session will be held with each partner individually, where each of you will have a chance to express your unique perspective on the relationship and provide personal history.
The fourth session and all consequent sessions will be held with both partners present.
You can expect to share about your emotions, needs, positions on various issues, and narratives about how you came to see the world the way you do.
Sometimes, we will delve into problem-solving and skills building. Other times, we will focus on the emotional side of things, depending on your current needs.
-
Our work together begins with helping you enter a trance state – a calm, relaxed state where your nervous system is soothed and more open to emotional release.
After that, we create or strengthen your internal resources, so you feel grounded and supported from the inside out.
From there, we explore the present-day concerns that are causing distress and gently uncover the emotions and beliefs connected to them – often the ones that have been buried or pushed aside for years.
Using those emotional threads as a guide, we trace the experience back to its origin in the subconscious, where the deeper roots of the issue live.
Through a variety of mind-body techniques, we help release the repressed feelings and unresolved conflicts stored in the body, while also identifying the internal programming and unconscious conclusions you may have adopted about yourself along the way.
Once this clarity and release begin to take place, we introduce powerful healing tools to shift negative patterns, soothe destructive emotional responses, and support new ways of relating to yourself and the world.

A ketamine-assisted therapy session is a guided inner experience that typically lasts about three hours, though the exact length can vary from person to person. The “journey” part of the session is usually an hour long.
You’ll be in a comfortable, supported environment the entire time, and you are never left alone: I remain present, monitoring your safety, offering grounding if needed, and holding the therapeutic container.
Outwardly, most people appear still and deeply relaxed; inwardly, the medicine and the music help open a spacious, reflective state where insights, emotions, and imagery can naturally arise, guided by your intention for the session.
Occasionally, mild nausea can occur, it’s your body’s way of releasing emotional or physical tension. If that happens, I’m prepared with what you need and will support you through it.
-
It’s completely normal to feel nervous about starting therapy - especially if you’ve been carrying pain alone for a long time or have had past experiences where you didn’t feel truly seen or understood.
Reaching out for help takes immense courage, and it’s okay if it feels a little scary at first. You’re stepping into something new, and that can bring up vulnerability - but it can also open the door to deep healing and lasting change.
-
That’s completely okay. In our work together, you are always in control of what you choose to share and when.
I will never push you to talk about something before you're ready. My approach honors your internal pace - if a part of you feels hesitant or protective, we can gently explore that with compassion, without forcing anything.
Your safety, sense of agency, and emotional readiness are always respected in our sessions.
-
I hear this fear often, and I want you to know: you are not too much, and you are absolutely not crazy.
What you’re carrying makes sense in the context of what you’ve lived through.
In therapy, we gently explore the parts of you that hold pain, fear, or shame - with deep compassion and zero judgment.
My role is not to fix or label you, but to help you understand and care for the parts of you that have been trying so hard to cope.
Every part of you is welcome here, exactly as you are.
About My Approach
-
For individuals, I tend to use EMDR therapy, IFS therapy or “parts work,” Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), hypnotherapy and ketamine-assisted therapy.
For couples, I use EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) and The Gottman Method.
Please see the questions below for a more detailed explanation of each of these therapies.
-
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-focused therapy that helps the brain heal from difficult experiences that were never fully processed.
Instead of only talking about what happened, EMDR works directly with the nervous system, allowing the mind and body to release the emotional charge stored in past memories.
Through guided bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or sound; the brain is able to reprocess painful memories in a way that feels safer and more adaptive, so they no longer trigger the same intensity of distress in the present.
What makes EMDR different is that you don’t have to relive every detail of the trauma for it to work.
The process taps into the brain’s natural ability to heal, helping clients move from feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or defined by the past to feeling more grounded, empowered, and present.
Many people describe EMDR as a gentle yet powerful way to break old patterns, calm the nervous system, and reclaim a sense of inner safety and self-trust.
For more information, please see my EMDR therapy page.
-
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate, trauma-informed therapy that understands we all have different “parts” within us: protective parts, wounded parts, reactive parts, and deeply wise core Self.
Instead of trying to get rid of any part of you, IFS helps you build a relationship with them. These parts formed for good reasons, often in response to pain or overwhelm, and they’re usually trying to protect you, even if their strategies don’t feel helpful anymore.
IFS gently guides you toward reconnecting with your core Self: the calm, grounded, strong, and caring center within you, and from that place, you can begin to heal the parts that are holding past burdens.
The goal isn’t to fix you, but to help your inner system feel safer, more connected, and more aligned, so you can move through life with clarity, self-trust, and emotional freedom.
For more information, please visit my IFS therapy page.
-
Hypnotherapy is a gentle, guided process that helps you access a deeply relaxed, meditative state – often called the theta state – where the conscious mind softens and the subconscious becomes more available.
In this state, you’re fully aware and in control, but your mind is open in a way that allows you to connect with stored emotions, younger parts of yourself, and experiences that may still be shaping how you feel and respond today.
It’s a powerful space for healing because you’re not just talking about the problem, you’re accessing the place where it lives.
What makes hypnotherapy so transformative is that you don’t have to force yourself to remember or analyze every detail of the past. The subconscious mind naturally brings forward what is ready to be healed.
From there, we can release emotional blocks, soften old protective patterns, and create new beliefs that feel supportive and true.
Instead of trying to think your way into change, hypnotherapy helps you feel the shift from the inside out: calmer body, clearer mind, and a more compassionate relationship with yourself.
-
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a trauma-focused, mind–body therapy that helps the brain quickly process and release distressing memories, images, and sensations, often in far less time than traditional talk therapy.
Using guided eye movements and a calm, focused state, ART allows the nervous system to “recode” painful experiences so they no longer carry the same emotional charge, without requiring you to retell the story in detail or relive the trauma.
What makes ART unique is its blend of neuroscience and creativity. You stay fully in control while your brain does the healing work, replacing disturbing images with ones that feel neutral or even empowering.
Many clients describe it as “emotional relief without re-traumatization.” The past is still part of your story, but it no longer runs your life, your body, or your reactions.
-
ADHD therapy with me is a collaborative, compassionate process where you’re not just listened to, you’re actively supported, guided, and encouraged.
We begin by creating a safe, judgment-free space where your experience is honored in its full depth, not reduced to symptoms or stereotypes. I take time to truly understand how ADHD shows up in your life: emotionally, mentally, relationally, and in the day-to-day challenges that can feel overwhelming.
From there, we focus on what matters most to you right now, whether that’s emotional regulation, motivation, follow-through, self-trust, or repairing the burnout that comes from trying to “keep up.”
Together, we clarify what you want for your life: not just what you want to fix, but what you want to build. We then co-create a plan rooted in your strengths, using tools that are practical, realistic, and aligned with your nervous system – not someone else’s idea of productivity.
As you integrate these skills, you’ll start to experience real shifts in how you manage your time, energy, emotions, and self-talk.
Research shows that therapy can literally rewire patterns of thought and behavior, and over time, you grow not just more organized, but more grounded, resourced, and at home in who you are.
-
Ketamine-Assisted Therapy is a therapeutic process that combines the use of ketamine, a legally prescribed medicine, with intentional psychotherapy to support deep emotional healing.
Ketamine temporarily shifts the brain out of its usual patterns, creating a window where long-held defenses soften, stuck emotions surface, and new insights become more accessible.
In this state, many people experience a sense of expanded awareness, reduced self-judgment, and the ability to view their inner world with more clarity and compassion.
What makes ketamine different from traditional talk therapy is that it works on both the biological and psychological levels. T
he medicine can help interrupt patterns of depression, trauma, or anxiety, while the therapy helps you integrate what arises, so the experience becomes meaningful, not just momentary.
With the right support, ketamine isn’t an escape from reality, it’s a catalyst for healing, self-connection, and lasting change.
For more information, please see my KAP page.
-
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a deeply relational, attachment-based approach that helps couples understand the patterns that show up in their relationships, especially the ones that create distance, conflict, or emotional disconnection.
Instead of focusing on who’s “right” or “wrong,” EFT looks underneath the surface to uncover the vulnerable emotions and unmet needs that are driving those reactive cycles. When those underlying emotions are understood and expressed safely, relationships can shift from tension and protection to closeness and trust.
What makes EFT so powerful is that it doesn’t just teach communication skills, it creates new emotional experiences in real time. By slowing down and working with what’s happening in the nervous system and the heart, people learn how to show up differently with themselves and each other.
The result is not just fewer arguments, but deeper safety, stronger bonds, and more authentic connection in your romantic partnership.
-
The Gottman Method is a research-based approach to couples therapy that focuses on strengthening the friendship, communication, and emotional connection at the core of a relationship.
Instead of guessing what makes relationships work, the Gottmans spent decades studying real couples to understand which patterns lead to disconnection and which ones support long-term love, respect, and partnership.
This method helps couples recognize harmful interaction cycles, build healthier ways of responding to one another, and turn toward each other rather than away during moments of stress or conflict.
What makes the Gottman Method so effective is its balance of emotional insight and practical tools.
Couples learn concrete skills like managing conflict, expressing needs without blame, increasing intimacy, and repairing after misunderstandings, while also deepening the emotional safety that makes those skills possible.
It’s not about having a “perfect” relationship, but about learning how to stay connected, even when life gets hard.
